Uncovering the Hidden Stories: Interviews and Visits

Updated: Apr 24

Uncovering the Hidden Stories By Ms O Hanlon and Ms Hogan In our ongoing Abbey Heritage Project, the girls have had the incredible opportunity to sit down with the nuns who once called the old convent in Rathfarnham, their home. These remarkable women have dedicated their lives to serving others and have a wealth of stories and experiences to share. Through their interviews, the girls have been able to capture their stories on video and camera, preserving their memories for future generations. Each nun has a unique perspective and a lifetime of wisdom to impart. From tales of their early days in the convent to their experiences teaching and caring for others, these interviews have provided a fascinating glimpse into the lives of these extraordinary women. One of the most important aspects of conducting these interviews was creating a comfortable and respectful environment for the nuns to share their stories. It was important to the girls to approach the interviews with enthusiasm and interest. Listening attentively and asking thoughtful questions helped to create a meaningful connection. In addition to the interviews, our amazing photographer Tanya Smith had also been taking portraits of the girls and nuns involved in the project. These portraits serve as a visual representation of the connection between the past and the present, showcasing the bond between the young students and the nuns. It is a powerful reminder of the legacy that these nuns have left behind and the impact they have had on the lives of others. Our project is not just about capturing individual stories; it is also about documenting the history of the Abbey and the Loreto Sisters. We have delved into archives, researched historical documents, and spoken to many people to piece together the rich history of this sacred place. We also had a wonderful visit by Sister Kathleen who dressed up in the traditional habit and spent time with our class. She spoke to the girls about the life of the sisters and had many stories to impart. It was really inspiring. To share our findings with a wider audience, we are creating an online gallery that will showcase the portraits and the history we have uncovered. This gallery will serve as a digital tribute to the nuns and their contributions to society. Additionally, we will be documenting our progress and sharing behind-the-scenes stories on our blog, allowing others to follow along on our journey of discovery. Through this project, we aim to honour the lives and stories of the nuns, ensuring that their legacy lives on. We hope that by capturing their experiences and sharing them with the world, we can inspire others and foster a deeper appreciation for the history and heritage of the Abbey and the Loreto Sisters.
