Following its closure in 1999, Loreto Abbey and surrounding site was acquired by Riversmith Limited for €14m, who developed the adjoining residential complex in the grounds. In total it comprised of 12.1 acres. The conversion of Loreto Abbey to a nursing home was part of the overall Masterplan for the site. However, this phase of the development did not proceed. Ten apartment blocks were built comprising of 271 apartments. However, after the financial crash, it eventually fell into the hands of NAMA and lay derelict for some time.
The sale of Loreto Abbey comprised of several buildings, including, the main Georgian house, a church building, north and south gate lodges, and a concert hall, which, in total, comprised of 92,860 sq. ft. It was sold to the State in a deal worth about €2.3m in 2014. The Department of Education then opened Gaelcholáiste an Phiarsaigh, a post primary, on the grounds. Loreto National School still resides in the original granite building and enjoys views of the Abbey.
